Professional Learning Communities at UAA

Authentic Assessment Program Leads to Development of Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences for Students

At the start of the 2022-23 school year, driven by an identified need for professional development in formative assessment practices in the CIS report and recommendations, small groups of teachers and Heads of Department at UAA began a journey through SEV-104: Motivating Learning through Authentic Assessment. Without artificial time constraints, these groups formed their own Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and worked their way through the course content on their own schedules. Two of these groups sat down with SEV Academy to share their experiences and how their exploration of authentic assessment led to the creation of interdisciplinary units of study.

CS & Bioinformatics

A computer science teacher, biology teacher, and Theory of Knowledge teacher worked together to create a unique set of learning experience that transcended disciplines. They started by exploring biological databanks to understanding their role in bioinformatics and then created machine learning algorithms to help predict incidence of cancer.
