Project-Based Learning at ACI

Exploration of Assessment AS Learning Leads Pioneering Lise 10 Teachers to New Heights of Student Engagement

The Turkish Language & Literature Department at ACI has had a traditional approach to assessment and in past years has incorporated the use of some project work for the final assessment at the end of Grade 10. As the team of Lise 10 teachers worked their way through the content of SEV-104: Motivating Learning through Authentic Assessment, they came to a new collective understanding of how assessment practices were really at the heart of learning.

This break in long-held beliefs inspired this group to challenge their students to do something wholly different. They presented the GRASPS concept to their students, which is core to the use of PBL, and invited them into a conversation about learning that pushed the boundaries of everyone involved. These teachers encouraged the students themselves to define the very products they would create at the end of the final unit of study for the year, while they purposely stepped back to be facilitators in the process. The teachers provided the rubrics, input, feedback, and guidance the students needed as they took complete ownership of the learning process.

The results were astounding. Their work culminated in a true multi-media student performance with products including live action performance, stage direction, video production, animation, original songwriting, art installations, poster presentations, and even the production of a video game. Don't just take our word for it, though. Listen to the teachers and students talk about their experiences in the videos below.
